How Does a Side Downdraft Paint Booth Work?

A side downdraft paint booth uses a primarily vertical airflow pattern. Filtered air enters through the ceiling intake and moves downward through the painting area. Air and airborne overspray are then drawn toward exhaust filters located along the lower side sections of the booth. This design combines overhead filtered air delivery with side-mounted exhaust, without requiring the full subsurface pit used in a pitted downdraft booth.

01. Ceiling Air Intake Filtered incoming air enters through the overhead intake system and moves down into the work area.
02. Vertical Airflow Air travels downward through the booth, helping carry airborne overspray away from the painting area.
03. Side Exhaust Air is drawn toward the lower side exhaust filters and discharged through the booth's exhaust system.
Planning to add a heated makeup air unit (AMU)? Side downdraft booths with a suitable intake filter box can be configured to support makeup air and heating. Confirm the intake arrangement, airflow requirements, and compatibility with your selected booth before ordering.
